CBI probe sought into IISc student’s suicide

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A CBI inquiry into the suicide of Ajay Shree Chandra, a Ph.D. student, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, last month has been demanded by the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Employees’ Welfare Association at the institute.

The body of the 21-year-old research student was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room on August 27.

The association took out a silent march on the campus and presented a letter to the Director of IISc on Thursday, demanding an “impartial inquiry.”

They described Chandra in their memorandum as a “brilliant student with an excellent academic record” and alleged that he had suffered “harassment on the basis of his caste.”

On Friday, the Samata Sainik Dal also staged a protest demanding a CBI inquiry.

The entries in the diary of Chandra were produced by the Association members, including one written the day before he died. Written in English and Telugu, these show Chandra’s troubled state of mind. “When all my friends’ projects are doing well, why is this happening to only my project,” he asked. “Maybe, I am in the wrong lab or this lab is not for me.” The association’s demands include the filling of the 22.5 per cent reservations for students from ST and SC communities in all academic programmes, including research, and a 50 per cent representation for Dalits on the internal inquiry committee set up to investigate Chandra’s death.

Asked for their reactions, the Director and Associate Director of the Institute said they did not wish to comment.

IISc did not pay the post-mortem bill

An anonymous comment left in Nanopolitan

IISc isn't that much better!

The health centre refused to pick up the post-mortem bill for the recent suicide which was 23K, a hefty sum the father had to pay. I don't know if the situation has changed. His colleagues were going to plead with the director.

IISc's medical insurance doesn't cover students anymore, only staff and faculty.

Guides harassed my son: Father

DH News Service, Bangalore:

The father of V Ajaya Sree Chandra (21), a student of Indian Institute of Science who committed suicide recently, has alleged that harassment by guides had driven his son to take the extreme step.

V Raveendra Kumar, father of V Ajaya Sree Chandra (21), a student of Indian Institute of Science who committed suicide recently, has alleged that harassment by guides had driven his son to take the extreme step.

Kumar has written letters to Sadashivanagar Police, Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police and Inspector General of Police (Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement) seeking stringent action against the guilty. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Kumar alleged that his son had ended life due to mental torture at the hands of his guides, he claimed.

“My son’s guides continuously harassed him. They often rejected his projects though they were superior compared to other students’. Despite his best efforts, his projects failed. My son often shared his mental torture with me and said that his lab was a “hell”. However, I used to convince him and encourage him to perform better,” he said.

He also claimed that his son had left a suicide note, which ran into pages. “Shockingly, it was missing when I reached Bangalore. Even his friends told me that there was a suicide note. He must have mentioned the reason,” Kumar added. However, he did not mention the names of those who allegedly harassed his son.

Ajaya Sree Chandra, a native of Hyderabad and a third semester Integrated PhD student of Biological Sciences, hanged himself in his hostel room on August 27, 2007. The police booked a case of unnatural death and it was believed that the victim had committed suicide due to pressure from his parents.

Sadashivanagar police said Kumar had approached them seeking an inquiry into the incident. According to the post-mortem report, Ajaya died due to suffocation

His father Ravindra Kumar had lodged a complaint with the Sadashivnagar police asking them to investigate the reason for his son’s suicide, while police had said that a domestic problem and depression had forced Ajay to take the extreme step.

Ravindra said that his son was depressed as he was being harassed by some people on the campus.

‘Anti-Dalit attitude’ led to IISc student’s extreme step, say parents and SSD

SSD inquiry found that some professors were harassing Dalit students

IISc denies discrimination and says independent report is due

Bangalore: The suicide of Ajay Srichandra, a Ph.D. student of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on July 28, was a result of caste-related harassment, the Dalit boy’s parents and members of Samata Sainik Dal (SSD) have alleged.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, M. Venkataswamy, President of SSD, said that they would hold a protest in front of IISc on September 28 against the “anti-Dalit attitude” of some professors in the institution. Mr. Venkataswamy said that Ajay, a student of integrated Ph.D., had not committed suicide in his hostel room due to depression as made out by the police. Members of SSD had conducted an independent inquiry and found that some professors of IISc were harassing and discriminating against Dalit students, he added. B. Chennakrishnappa, Bangalore District President of SSD, said that other students were in the know about it but were not willing to openly admit it.

Ajay’s father Ravindra Kumar, who was also at the press conference, alleged that his son’s suicide note had been tampered with. “I was first told that my son had written a suicide note running to two or three pages. But some pages had been removed by the time I reached here from Hyderabad,” he alleged. SSD has demanded that criminal cases be booked against professors and an independent inquiry conducted into the case by University Grants Commission.

An official at IISc told The Hindu that “there appears to be no harassment of any kind”. The institute has formed a committee to look into the matter, the official said. “A committee was formed immediately after the death of the student. The independent report should be coming through in a few days.”

SHRC to probe the issue

Through Times of India

BANGALORE: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) will probe the recent bus burning incident on Hosur Road in which two persons were charred to death and the suicide of a PhD student from IISc. It has registered cases by taking suo motu cognizance of both incidents.

In the first case, the SHRC will examine whether police negligence led to the burning of the bus and with focus on whether the police had prior information about the crime.

The SHRC has asked the additional chief secretary and principal secretary (home) to submit a report on the police's action within two weeks.

In the IISc suicide case, the SHRC will examine whether harassment by teachers or students led to the suicide of PhD student Ajay Srichandra. The student's father and a Dalit organisation have alleged that harassment was the cause of Ajay's suicide. The SHRC has directed the home secretary to submit a report in a month and wants the investigation to be led by an officer whose rank is not less than an IGP. A notice has also been sent to Ajay's father for his version.

The IISc has constituted a committee to probe the incident and its report is expected by this week-end.

A Draft of the petition to be sent to Hon Chief Justice of India

To,
Mr. Justice. K.G. Balakrishnan
The Hon’ble Chief justice of India , New Delhi

SUBJECT: REQUESTING LEGAL REMEDIES CONCERNING A DALIT STUDENT, A VICTIM OF ABETED SUICIDE FUELLED BY GROSS SOCIAL EXCLUSION AND CASTE-BASED DISCRIMINATION.

Sir,
Most respectfully, we do submit as follows:

That Mr.Ajay Shri Chandra, an IInd year student of Integrated PhD. Course at IISC, Bangalore (Indian Institute of Sciences), committed suicide on 27th of August, Monday at around 6 a.m. in his designated hostel room.
-That it was not a mere suicide as suggested but abetted suicide.
-That Ajay belongs to Scheduled Caste category of Andhra Pradesh due to which he was subjected to social exclusion and discrimination even though he was very studious and had consistently been securing more than 80% all his life.
-That his guide, Dr.Ajit Kumar and Co-Guide, Dr.Raghavendra Gadkar used to insult, abuse, humiliate and discriminate on the basis of caste. In one course, Dr. Raghavendra awarded only a “D” grade which was undervalued purposely to demoralise him.
-That he suffered depression and mental trauma of the treatment he was prearranged. He was isolated and was completely ignored by fellow students and professors.
-That the media reported his guide had asked some student to inquire regarding Ajay’s whereabouts. When that student went to his room, the door was locked from the inside. When he did not respond to several people’s attempt to wake him up, the door was broken open with the help of security guards only to find him hanging.
-That there was a 7 page suicide note found at the room he was hanging in which had mysteriously disappeared police records.
-That the police had taken custody of the body to conduct post-mortem.
-That his parents were informed only after two days of the incident.
-That police had handed over the body along with only a two page suicide note.
-That Mr.Govind Raj, a non-teaching staff in the college (mobile no. 09945346077) and Prof.Jay Bhaskaran know all these facts.
-That many students of the same batch left the institution soon after the tragic incident.
-That no proper investigation has been done about the same. No arrests have been made.
-That most of the dalit students have been facing such instances of social exclusion from upper caste professors.

It is humbly requested to consider these facts on a broader perspective and initiate necessary legal action, inquiry and investigation to arrest the culprits and provide appropriate remedy to the victim’s family and to provide an adequate forum to complain the occurrence of such incidents so as to avoid adverse conditions resulting from caste-atrocities and social exclusion. Also, to constitute a commission of inquiry to study the situation and matter related there with.

Thanking You,
Your Sincerely,
Sanjay

What is the reason: Directors reply to an Alumnus

The following mail was sent by an alumnus to IISc director, Associate director and Alumini Association. He is closely working Atrcitynews team, thanks brother!

Sir,

I read the news about the suicide by a bright young chap last week. This was shocking to me as I was associated with institute for two years.I feel there should be mentor allocated to students to address various problems of students as student of various background join the institute. It is also bad to the repute of institute.

Also I heard that there was some pressure on a Dalit/SC category student from the department on performance.Even if there is an element of such thing, then it should be highly condemned. This set bad example to society and future generations.

The institute is above all such things and I feel proud being part of the same.

If some students are having such problems then please attend to problems of such students and provide psychological support.

Regards,
An Alumnus

Atrocity news

Director at IISc has replied within 5 minutes. His reply was:

“Dear student,
The recent suicide was a most regrettable incident and one for which all of us are deeply grieved. The loss of a young life is irreparable. I must add that there was no academic pressure on the student from the institute.

Nor was there any pressure due to community. These events are personal and hard to rationalise. It would help everyone if there was no attempt to apportion blame to the surroundings.

Best wishes
P.Balaram”

Atrocitynews thinks that the local union and batchmates should resort to all proper methods of investigation and come along with fact finding report on issue in order to submit it to CJI, President of India and PMO.

Meanwhile Atrocitynews team interacted with teaching and non-teaching staff atIISC. Prof Bhaskaran informed that the IISC union meeting will take place next week in order to take the stock of the situation and union would see then how to respond to given situation, till that time better wait. He said he would update Atrocitynews soon.

A PhD student of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore committed suicide due to "depression" by hanging himself in his hostel room, a senior police official said on Monday.

Ajay Srichandra was found hanging from the ceiling of his room by his friend at 10.30 am, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) BNS Reddy told PTI in Bangalore.

"His friend Deeptaroop Nandi, who had earlier called him on the mobile but got no response, went up to his room and rang the bell which also went unanswered. When he peeped from the window, he saw Srichandra's body hanging from the ceiling," he said.

Police, who were alerted immediately, removed the body and sent it to the nearby MS Ramaiah hospital for an autopsy, he said.

Pressure drives IISc student to suicide

DH News Service, Bangalore:
Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Wilting under academic pressure, a 21-year-old IISc student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at the students hostel in the campus here in the wee hours of Monday

The deceased has been identified as V Ajay Sree Chandra, a native of Hyderabad, who was doing his integrated PhD.
Ajay was to have turned 21 in another four days. All that he has left behind is a suicide note scribbled on the small white board in his room. It read: “I am sorry dad. The world is not for me and I cannot live. It's too much for me, I can’t take it.”

Ajay had been a trailblazer all along. Securing 88.83 per cent in the matriculation exam, he scored 94.14 per cent in PUC and 83 per cent in BSc. Dreaming of making it big in his chosen field of ecological sciences, Ajay excelled at the IISc entrance exam in 2006 and was among the top 12 students selected for the biology division.

Ajay was staying in a room on the I floor of the new hostel block F002.
He was awake late on Sunday night, watching TV with his hostel-mates Diptaroop Nandi and Sumantra Roy among others.
“He looked depressed throughout the evening and when we offered to stay with him, he said he should be left alone,” said one of his hostel-mates.
Ajay’s absence at the breakfast table on Monday forced his friends to call him on his mobile phone. When they didn’t get any response, Nandi and Roy decided to drop in at their friend’s room. As Ajay did not open the door, the boys peeped in through the window only to see him hanging from the ceiling fan.
The security personnel who broke open the door. Ajay was rushed to the health centre where he was “declared brought dead”.

Prof Raghavendra Gadkar, head of the department of ecological sciences, said: “Ajay was a bright student. I had taken only one class for him and there was hardly any interaction with him. Probably, he might have found it difficult to cope up with the academic pressure. It is a matter of time. Usually students find it tough in the beginning but they excel as the days roll by.”
Ajay’s parents are on their way to the City.

Ajay Srichandra

In what appears to be a depressed state, Ajay Srichandra, a student in Biological Sciences at IISc, committed suicide yesterday. From the news reports, we gather that one or two friends and a teacher were beginning to be aware of Ajay's depression but, sadly, he ended his life before psychological help could reach him.

Suicides are always tough to deal with, and all I can do now is to repeat the rather un-original message I posted back in December 2005 (following the suicide of an IIT-K student): depression is treatable. There's a lot of very helpful (and academically validated) information available at the American Psychological Association on both depression and its opposite, emotional health. See, for example, this overview on depression. Another recent article talks about prevention strategies such as teaching school kids anti-depressive thinking.
